Carbon fiber tubes are one of the fastest ways to cut weight from a structure while keeping it stiff. But "a carbon tube" is not one product — shape, manufacturing process, layup, tow and finish all change the price and the performance. This guide walks through the decisions a buyer actually has to make so you can send a clear specification and get an accurate quote the first time.

Tube shapes and when to use them

Start with how the tube mounts and loads, because that drives the shape:

  • Round tubes — the default. Best strength-to-weight and torsional stiffness, ideal for drone arms, booms, camera sliders, poles and structural struts.
  • Square and rectangular tubes — flat faces for easy clamping and mounting, high bending stiffness in one axis. Good for frames, gantries and linear structures.
  • Tapered / conical tubes — for masts, antennas, poles and telescoping sections where diameter must change along the length.
  • Custom profiles — oval, D-shape, airfoil and other cross-sections molded to your geometry for aero and specialty structures.

Roll-wrapping rolls prepreg sheets around a mandrel and cures them under heat and pressure. Because you choose the ply angles, you can tune the tube for bending, torsion or crush and get a premium cosmetic weave. Pultrusion pulls fibers through a resin bath and die for a continuous, extremely straight, axially stiff tube at low cost — but with little tunability and weaker torsion. Compression molding suits square and profile tubes and higher volumes. For most demanding structural tubes, roll-wrapping wins; for straight, axially loaded, cost-sensitive parts, pultrusion is often enough.

Weave, tow and surface finish

The visible weave is largely cosmetic and is independent of the structural layup underneath:

  • Weave patterns: 3K twill (the classic cross-hatch look), plain, unidirectional (UD), plus jacquard, forged/marble and colored weaves for branding.
  • Tow size: 1K–48K. 3K gives a fine cosmetic surface; 12K–48K is more economical for structural layers.
  • Modulus: standard (T300/T700 class) for most parts, or high-modulus fiber where stiffness is critical.
  • Finish: high-gloss, matte or satin clear coat.

Diameter, wall thickness and tolerance

Typical manufacturable ranges are OD 3–120 mm, wall 0.5–5 mm and length up to about 2000 mm per piece (longer by bonded joints). Two rules save time:

  • Size the wall to the load, not to a catalog. The right wall and layup come from your bending, torsion or buckling case. If you are replacing a metal tube, send its dimensions and we will match or beat its stiffness at lower weight.
  • Tell us which surface is critical. A tube that slides inside a bearing needs a tight OD; a tube that a shaft passes through needs a tight ID. We grind or CNC that surface to ±0.05 mm while leaving the other as-molded to save cost.

MOQ, lead time and what to send

To get an accurate quote fast, send: the shape and dimensions (OD, ID or wall, length), the load or the metal part you are replacing, the critical surface and tolerance, the weave/finish, and the annual quantity. With that, a factory can confirm process, tooling, MOQ and lead time in one pass.

Standard round tubes on existing mandrels ship in about 1–3 weeks with low MOQs. Custom profiles and tapered tubes need new tooling, which adds cost and time up front but is amortized over the run.
