Almost every serious drone and UAV uses carbon fiber somewhere, because the material directly buys the two things that matter most in flight: stiffness and low weight. This guide covers which parts to make from carbon, which process fits each, and how to order.
Why drones use carbon fiber
A drone airframe must resist the bending and torsion from motor thrust and prop loads without flexing, and it must do so at minimum weight so more of the battery goes to flight time and payload. Carbon fiber has the specific stiffness to do both, plus it damps vibration (cleaner camera and sensor data) and shrugs off outdoor and marine corrosion. Frames, arms, plates and tubes
- Frame plates / decks: CNC-cut carbon sheet — solid for small frames, cored sandwich for large or heavy-lift decks.
- Arms / booms: roll-wrapped round or square tubes, cut and drilled for motor mounts.
- Landing gear and struts: tubes or molded parts.
- Complex structural parts: molded LFT carbon composite to consolidate brackets and mounts.
Which process for which part
Match the process to the part: CNC-cut plate for flat frame components, roll-wrapped tube for arms and booms (best strength-to-weight), and LFT injection molding for complex 3D parts at volume that would otherwise be an assembly of metal pieces. For a full breakdown see LFT vs SFT vs prepreg.
Hitting a weight target
Weight is a design output, not a guess. Give us the drone size, take-off weight and motor/prop loads, and we size arm wall thickness and plate construction to hit your stiffness with margin at minimum mass. For the lightest build, cored sandwich plates plus thin-wall roll-wrapped arms usually win.
