China makes a large share of the world’s carbon fiber products, from drone parts to automotive trim. Sourcing there can cut cost and lead time dramatically — or go wrong if you pick the wrong partner. This guide is the process we walk international customers through, including the questions a good factory should ask you.
Why source carbon fiber from China
Three practical reasons: competitive pricing on fiber, prepreg, tooling and skilled layup labor; deep process capability across roll-wrapping, molding, CNC and finishing; and speed, because the whole supply chain is concentrated. The catch is variance in quality and communication, which the rest of this guide helps you manage.
Factory vs trading company
The most important early decision. A trading company resells parts made by someone else — you pay a margin, lose direct engineering contact and cannot see how the part is made. A real factory controls the material and process, gives you engineers to talk to, and can solve problems at source. Ask directly: Do you own your workshop and equipment? Can we video-call the production line? A vertically integrated maker such as Doolike handles material, molding and CNC in-house.
The OEM/ODM process, step by step
- Inquiry & DFM. You send a drawing, 3D file or sample. The factory reviews design-for-manufacture — wall thickness, radii, fiber direction, draft — and suggests changes that improve strength or lower cost.
- Material & process selection. Prepreg layup, roll-wrapping, compression, autoclave, or LFT/SFT molding — chosen from your loads, volume and finish.
- Quotation. Unit price, tooling cost, MOQ and lead time.
- Tooling & sample. A prototype or first-article sample is made and shipped for your approval against the drawing.
- Mass production. After you approve the sample, production runs to an agreed inspection standard.
- QC, packaging & shipping. Final inspection, protective packaging and export by sea or air.
Tooling, samples and MOQ
Match the tooling to your stage. For prototypes, use soft or aluminum tooling to keep cost low; move to hard steel tooling for mass production. Cut plates and standard tubes may need little tooling at all. Always ask for a physical sample before committing — a drawing approval is not the same as holding the real part. Quality control and testing
Good carbon fiber QC covers three things: dimensional (calipers, gauges, CMM against your drawing), visual/surface (weave alignment, voids, finish) and material/mechanical (fiber content, cure, and where needed third-party lab reports such as SGS). Ask how incoming prepreg is stored — quality makers keep it frozen and climate-control the layup room. Agree an AQL inspection level up front so “good quality” is defined, not assumed.
How to vet a supplier (red flags)
- Green flags: ISO 9001 / IATF 16949, asks DFM questions, shows its own workshop on video, provides test reports, signs an NDA, gives clear tiered pricing.
- Red flags: a price with no questions asked, no factory audit or video allowed, vague material specs, no sample before bulk, and reluctance to put tooling ownership or confidentiality in writing.
